Common Signs of Failure

A sight glass is a wear item that degrades over time due to heat and jobsite conditions. You should replace yours immediately if you notice:

• Weeping Oil: A slow, continuous drip from the base of the glass indicating that the internal O-ring has flattened, hardened, or failed.
• Opaque or Stained Window: Internal discoloration or clouding that makes it impossible to tell if your pump is full of fresh oil or completely dry.

Warning: Sight glass thread sizes (typically specific metric or NPT measurements) vary wildly depending on the exact pump or compressor head bolted to your machine. You must strictly cross-reference the data plate on your pump body with your Mi-T-M parts diagram to ensure you order the correct diameter and thread pitch.

You must drain the oil from your pump or compressor before attempting to unscrew and replace the sight glass! Once the old glass is removed, take a moment to carefully wipe away any grit or old O-ring material from the crankcase threads. When installing the new OEM sight glass, do not over-torque it. Over-tightening will either crush the new O-ring causing an immediate leak, or crack the brand-new glass right down the middle. Hand-tighten it, and then give it just a gentle snug with a wrench.
